celena: (Default)
Kidnapped as a child, Celena spent ten years as a prisoner of the Zaibach Empire, stripped of her memory, trapped in a twisted body and trained to fight in their wars.

Once her Alteration broke she was able to escape home, but two years on and she's still struggling with the fact that though she was born a soft and coddled noblewoman she was raised as a ruthless warrior.

Here in the anonymity of another kidnapping she seeks to find a middle path, one that lets her use her specialised skills while allowing her to hold onto her empathy and her desire to make sure no one else ever has to be twisted by forces outside of their control.

These are the people in Celena's life, those who shaped her and those who shape her now

Those she loves
Sir Allen Schezar
Her Brother
Her elder brother is her rock, her protector, the man who loves her unconditionally despite her wicked past.

Allen is not a perfect man: he has a bastard child he refuses to tell her anything about, he's overbearing about protecting her from harm and he still possesses a messed up attitude to other women which leads him to flirt horribly with any female friends he makes, but Celena wouldn't give him up for the world.

Queen Millerna Aston I
Her Regent
At first Celena badly misjudged the then Princess Millerna, seeing only a confection of a girl dressed in pink and jewels who had nothing in her silly head except a crush on an older man. Getting to know Millerna was one of the greatest revelations of Celena's life. Millerna may love jewels and pretty pinkness, but she's a tenacious, smart and principled woman able to stand her ground for the sake of the kingdom she loves. By the time Millerna ascended the throne last year Celena's admiration was deep and strong.

What can't Celena tell you about Millerna? Millerna's cleverer than her, as she'd studied to be a doctor until her father banned that path as unbefitting a princess, but still she saved Allen's life. Millerna's so effortlessly feminine, so wise in the ways of what makes an Asturian woman noticed, but she's taught Celena that this isn't a weakness but a power to be used all of its own, to charm and to dazzle and to lull people into false senses of superiority. Millerna loves deeply, but she understands that her position is important enough to the kingdom that she's willing to settle for the friendship of an arranged marriage in order to tie her war-ravaged country together.

Celena might wish to work as a knight, but her ambition is to grow to be a woman as well rounded and admirable as Queen Millerna. She secretly hopes that if she wins the tourney Millerna will choose her to be her personal bodyguard, for surely a woman is more trustworthy than a man.

Erisha Maddon
Her Cook
Erisha has been working for the Schezar family since she was twelve, before Celena's father was born. Celena and Allen never call her anything but Cook, for she is the head of the kitchen.

Celena has very few memories of the golden days before she was kidnapped, but one of those is of Cook, who seemed so large at the time, feeding her an apricot pastry still warm from the oven and tell her how her son grew those apricots in his orchard.

Cook still makes those apricot pastries whenever they are in season, for she remembers just how much Celena adored them as a child. She is one of the only close adults left in Celena's life who is still alive.

Macey Maddon
Her Handmaiden
When Celena returned back home from Zaibach she was plagued with night terrors whenever she was left to sleep alone. At first Allen slept in her room, holding her hand, but when the terrors persisted past the first few weeks Macey, Cook's teenage granddaughter was brought in as an alternative. Macey has four sisters and was used to sharing a bed already, so she took to her duties as bed comforter with aplomb, even if at first the Lady Schezar had a tendency to cling in the night.

Macey is privy to Celena's life in a way no one else is. She's a calm and steady girl, not particularly pretty but one who takes delight in prettying up Celena with elaborate hairstyles. She genuinely admires Celena for her talents and the way she's grown and in turn Celena thinks of her as a way to repent for how she treated her Dragonslayers. She takes her time to listen to Macey's thoughts and woes, giving her the patience she should have given her boys.

Macey was the first to know about Celena's ambitions to try out for the knight's tourney and her duties now include counting Celena's reps as she exercises at dawn and helping to hide the evidence of her activities from Sir Allen.

Those she grieves for
Lady Encia Schezar
Her Mother
Celena's mother died only a few months after Celena was kidnapped, for the depressive state she fell into left her too weak against the winter sickness that swept through Asturia that year. She's learnt not to voice her regret out loud, for those around her tell her she's not to blame for accepting a strange woman's gift of a sugared flower that proved to be a sedative to ease her kidnapping. Perhaps she was only five but she should have known that was wrong and that she should have run back to mama. If she hadn't have been greedy, if she hadn't have accepted so blindly, Mama would still be alive.

Celena has very few true memories of her mother, though she retains the general impression of having been loved deeply. One clear memory is of sitting on Mama's lap while Mama brushed her hair and praised for how long it was growing and how pretty it looked. Celena grows her hair now to get it long enough her mother would have considered it beautiful.

Another fragile half-memory is of her mother playing her harp. Celena is unsure whether this memory is a dream or real, but as she began to learn the harp using her mother's old songbooks she's discovered that she has so many golden, peaceful emotional associations with the pieces. She may not retain many memories of her mother's voice or face, but she knows that she must have spent hours tucked by her mother or playing in the same room as she practised her harp.

For Celena her harp is her mother's voice and thus an instrument she bends all her determination into mastering completely.

Those who make her happy
King Dryden Fassa
Her King
She should probably feel less fond of Dryden than she does, given that her King has his throne only because of Millerna agreeing to settle for an arranged marriage machinated by his father, but Dryden makes her laugh in ways other men of her station can't. Though he's serious when performing his duties, he's completely irreverent in personal interactions, making mock of much of his society's precious mores and mannerisms. He relaxes Celena over worrying overtly about how she's perceived.
Gaddes
Her Brother's Man
Gaddes has the misfortune of being handsome and being close enough to Allen to know just how swiftly Allen would kill him if he flirted with Celena. This makes him the perfect target for Celena to practice her coquettery without fear that he'd actually ever take her up on her fluttery lashes or insinuations.
Vannannu
Her Servant's Child
Vannannu's a three year old catboy, which means he's an energetic amalgamation of kitten and toddler. He climbs the curtains with his claws, hides under furniture to scritch at people's ankles and climbs into drawers to sleep, causing his mother no end of bushy-tailed exasperation, but Celena finds him hilarious and adorable. Playing with him helps provoke old memories of her childhood, and so Celena makes time for him whenever she can. He's a sweetie who sits fascinated as she plays her harp and likes to climb into her lap to sleep and she enjoys coddling him while his mother tidies the house with Macey and the other girls.

As Celena is from another world, there are a number of names and concepts that she'd use which differ from what we use on Earth. This is a glossary of the words she's most likely going to be tossing around.

Measurements
Gaian termEarth Equivalent
Miet30 seconds, used instead of minutes
MoonA lunar month. Used instead of Solar months
CostaA unit of length, equal to 0.987 metres
PeizoA unit of weight, equal to 1.104 metric tonnes
AlmudA measure of volume, ~ 1 litre
Species
Species NameDescription
BeastmenVarious, diverse tribes of people with animalian features. These might include fur, tails, claws or animalian skulls. They are oppressed in many parts of Gaia.
DraconiansThe descendants of the refugees of Atlantis, they are widely considered to be a cursed race. Although they can pass as humans, they are able to manifest white, feathery wings upon their backs at will.
DragonsPredatory, fire breathing lizards, commonly believed to be mere beasts. However, though they cannot communicate with the other races they are sentient beings. They are sensitive to the ripples in Fate caused by strong emotion. Their legendary rage is merely echoing the rage and fear of the humans who confront them.
DopplegangersA tribe of beastmen able to suck out a person's lifeforce, gaining that person's memories and abilities while taking on their form. Their victim is left behind as a dried husk. Though in their own form they can camouflage themselves like chameleons they have a very particular, pungent smell.
EquinesGoat-footed beasts of burden similar, but not quite the same as horses
IspanoShort, cloaked creatures who live between dimensions. They are renowned for the quality of their engineering.
MermaidsThe same as on Earth. They are sometimes captured to be kept as curiosities.

Gaian Technology
Gaian termDescription
GuymelefSteampunk suits of armour between 7.5-10 metres tall, piloted by warrior sitting in its chest cavity. Each limb of the guymelef pilot controls the corresponding limb on the armour.
EscaflowneThe ancient, Ispano-built guymelef that can only be piloted by the king of Fanelia. Legend has it that the blood bond between the pilot and the armour can channel the spirit of the God of War that Escaflowne is named for, though at a terrible cost. Dilandau's mission is to capture this armour and its pilot.
AlseidesA Zaibachan-made state of the art guymelef. It comes equipped with the latest advances in Zaibachan technology, such as flamethrowers, liquid metal weapons, an invisibility cloak and flight capability. Dilandau's personal Alseides was painted red.
EnergistInside a dragon's heart is a spherical crystal known as a dragenergist. These are used as heat and power sources in Gaian steam technology in place of burning wood or coal.
LevistoneAlso known as the Wandering Earth. A type of floating rock found in Gaia. It is buoyant due to having masses of lighter-than-air gasses trapped inside. When heated, the buoyancy of the rock decreases. These rocks can be massive and float in streams across the sky.
LevishipAn airship. They consist of one or more boulder sized levistones attached to a living space, with sails and rudders to control their direction. They are the main mode of long-distance transportation in Gaia.
Floating FortressZaibachan war fortresses, built into and onto massive leviboulders. These are large enough to support an entire garrison of guymelef pilots for months.
Fate Prognostication EngineA machine focussed on the Emperor of Zaibach's perfect future. It allows him to focus on what individuals or forces are interfering with the likelihood of destiny following the path to that future.
CrimaA liquid metal used as a weapon in the Alseides. It can be manipulated to form long darts or hardened into swords. At high temperatures it burns fiercely.
ShadowgraphBlack and white photograph.
Locations
NameDescription
AsturiaCelena's homeland, with both mountainous regions and a strong sea- and air-faring merchantile focus. Asturia has a Mediterranean climate and is known for its high-quality vino.
PalasThe capital city of Asturia, built against a deep natural harbour sheltered by cliffs that make excellent levi-ship landing bases. There are as many canals as there are streets and the city is a prosperous hub of trade. Celena grew up near here
Fort CasteloAn outpost in the swamp between Asturia and Fanelia. Celena's brother once manned this fort during his unofficial exile from Palas until it was razed by Dilandau
The Empire of ZaibachOriginally a small desert kingdom, Zaibach expanded into a mighty, technologically advanced empire over the last two hundred years under the leadership of Emperor Dornkirk. They were beaten by a coalition of other nations several years ago, leading to Celena's rescue.
FaneliaA small, forest kingdom ruled by King Van on the eastern border with Asturia. Dilandau razed this to the ground in the first act of Zaibachan aggression in the Destiny War
FreidA desert kingdom on the southern border of Asturia, whose child-duke is the nephew of the current queen of Asturia. The local religion involves Buddhist-flavoured worship of the Draconians
AsgardThe bleak, snowy continent north of the continent on which Celena lives.
AtlantisThe legendary island destroyed by the hubris of the Draconians ten thousand years ago. Artefacts of Atlantis can be found scattered throughout Gaia
The Mystic ValleyThe home of the Draconian refugees who fled Atlantis' fall. Though explorers have searched for its location it cannot be reached by normal means.
The Mystic MoonThe Gaian name for Earth, which can be seen from their skies. Said to be the home of demons
The White MoonThe moon shared by both Earth and Gaia. However the side of the moon seen by Gaia has a large structure built upon it in the vague shape of an eye, easily visible across most of its face
